First, let me set context here. I''m rather new to Bruce Springsteen. I''m 58 but treated him with indifference though I knew his music and story. How could anyone in the USA miss that story back in the 70''s when it was plastered all over Newsweek and Time? Later on in the 80''s someone loaned me Born to Run but I just did not see what the fuss was about. I was too stuck into my Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker records. I wanted to hear virtuosity... there are many types of virtuosity and certainly that exists with Bruce and The E Street Band but it wasn''t the sort of virtuosity I was looking for. Anyway... Tastes and motivations change as we get older, don''t they? I saw Bruce''s performance in the Superbowl a few years back and was impressed but our family went through some big changes and moved cross-country and I forgot about that. Long story short, I got here via The Clash and London Calling after finally getting curious to see what THAT was all about. I decided to buy the Live in NY City collection as was just blown away by the power of the sound, the incredible showmanship and of course the songs. Land of Hope and Dreams is what sealed the deal for me. So I decided I needed to add to my very large music collection by purchasing something new (the studio version of Land of Hope and Dreams helped me decide on Wrecking Ball) and Born in the USA.

I''m really enjoying the songs on Wrecking Ball; these seem to be a cross between the stuff he''s done with The E Street Band and Irish folk music (which I''ve heard he was doing a few years back so I''ll investigate that too). The music has a lot of power, a larger-than-life foundation underneath (I''m a musician by the way).

My only complaint with this special edition is the larger packaging. The booklet and photos are great; it''s a handsome package but it doesn''t fit into the shelves I have for my collection (too tall). That''s a pretty small complaint though. Great stuff, I look forward to expanding my collection and getting a little more context.

"Wrecking Ball" is a disenchanted look at the current state of affairs in the country today. A champion of the working man, Springsteen is acutely aware of the vanishing middle class. The poor are still poor, the rich are using their money to make more money and the working man is going under for the final time. In his words, he has always been aware of the difference between American reality and the American dream. The inspiration for the album comes from Bruce''s dismay at the Wall Street crisis. He is frustrated that people lost their jobs and their homes while no one was held accountable and the bonus money was still being paid. Musically, Ron Aniello takes us on a tour of various Springsteen styles recalling "Born In The USA", "Nebraska", "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" and "The Seeger Sessions ". Heck, a couple of songs sound like Bruce is channeling The Pogues or The Dropkick Murphys. There are going to be people who think the album doesn''t stand up to the classics in his catalogue or wonder what Bruce knows about having too much month at the end of the money. Understandable, I suppose but I don''t think it should diminish of Springsteen''s "Lion in Winter" roar.

This is pure, vintage Bruce Springsteen---but Springsteen with the wisdom and temperament of senior citizenship. It''s a gritty, old styled rock ''n roll libretto carrying an unmistakable, but muted critique of American plutocracy.
The songs strike repeatedly upon the nostalgic chords of a long-gone industrial memory. The lyrics unfurl with muffled outrage over social hypocrisy and working class exploitation...as newborn wraiths of contemporary disaster, in the form of the recent economic meltdown, haunt the album.
Springsteen''s music has always been heavy on the drums, base runs and his signature elided, gravel-voiced rock-lyrics...and "Wrecking Ball" is no exception. It is a creature of that same creative working class muse. It''s also heavy on the unstated but implicit condemnation of those responsible for the loss of our great national industrial spinal column and the erosion of the "social contract" of the 1940''s, a covenant that built America''s middle class. The name of the album is clearly metaphorical...America''s great economic beating heart has mutated into a "wrecking ball" and Bruce wants to sing about it.
In short, Bruce is older but all there. Solid. Unwavering. Vintage Bruce Springsteen...working class hero, rock-auteur. I love it.

I got the foreign copy that has two extra songs. The "American Land" is from his Pete Seeger Sessions album, but was a merry, light touch after the morose Peter-Gabriel-style "Swallowed Up". I felt this album had a strange mixture of some of his weakest songs in a while (This Depression, You''ve Got It) and some of his best rockers in years that simply overshadowed any perceived deficiencies in the other songs. You don''t get much better than the leadoff song, the title song, and the last song -- but I''m not sure that Jack of All Trades and Death to my Hometown in the middle of the CD don''t do just that.

This album sounds flat and lifeless and in places muffled, however big a fan i am of something i will listen to the samples and when they are like this i will give them a miss. I replaced the "Born in the USA" album a few weeks ago because mine was bought in the 90''s i think and they said the new one was remastered so i replaced it and it sounds great, how can they get an album that old to sound way better than something they produced a few years ago?

I love this album - out of all the Springsteen albums I own, this is by far my favourite. In the past I think Springsteen has written protest songs (the most well-known probably being ''Born in the USA'') but this, to me, is a full-on, well-thought out, well-written protest album. It contains a lot of fury and resignation, interwoven in a variety of bombastic and pared-down pieces of music. As a whole it starts off angry and sad and then moves on to throwing down some defiance, ending on a beautiful high. There isn''t a song I don''t enjoy on the album and am guilty of forcing it on a variety of other people, I love it so much.

As a relative newcomer to Bruce, this is the first ''current'' Springsteen album I have bought. And what struck me about this album is how current it sounded: I didn''t know what to expect? Was he still stuck in the glory days? And if so, which glory days? Or would he be chugging along, doing nothing interesting in a vaguely modern way? Or trying too much to be modern and failing miserably? But the beautiful thing about this album is that it demonstrates two things: what a great songwriter Bruce Springsteen still is, and how his musicality (and that of those around him) keeps his material sounding fresh, at least here. Working with orchestras, gospel choirs, and even Rage Against The Machine''s Tom Morello, this is an awesome record. My personal favourite is probably the opener, We Take Care of Our Own, which feels part catchy and chart-worthy, and part soaring anthem. But after seeing parts of the album live - and Springsteen live is something special - I''m drawn more and more to the country stylings of Shackled and Drawn and the somehow at once acoustic and anthemic title track (think thousands singing the emotional refrain ''Hard times come, hard times go/Hard times come, hard times go/Just to come around again/Bring on your wrecking ball''). So a big thumbs up from me. And now begins my gradual accumulation of Springsteen''s enormous back catalogue...
